Who are you selling it to?

Impression management is an important part of your job search. Identifying your target audience, and researching that audience will provide insight into the type of impressions that will yield the most desired results in your job search efforts.

Discussion Questions

  • What messages do you think your current interview style gives a potential employer?
  • What is the first perception you want an industry contact to have of you?
  • What do you think a positive perception of a top candidate looks like for an employer in this industry?
  • How do you normally address negatives or challenges to contacts and employers?

Activity

Objective: To learn your audience in an interview and how to adjust based on different situations.

Activity Instructions: One person will sit in the front of the room as if they are in an interview. SSC will choose a scenario for the interview and ask questions to the interviewee. The class will give feedback/have a discussion about what the interviewee should have done differently or what they did well.
